I grew up with boys and they were always getting dirty and I was told I could do what I wanted. I always chose to wear my dresses and stay clean. I never liked mud or dirt or anything and I still don't. People do what they want to do. If they want to get dirty, they will. If not, they won't.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6529647435872563341.post-26405816213113162402011-07-12T14:07:12.707-04:002011-07-12T14:07:12.707-04:00Can I join the club? The "clean" metaphor really does haunt our culture. As a woman, I'm definitely taught to avoid getting dirty (though as a horseback riding and a life of being "one of the guys" has kept me from fulfilling that ideal). Racially, the term is definitely loaded. And when it comes to writing, how often do we tell people to "clean up" their papers?

Dig deeper, but stay clean? Well that sounds like an impossible task.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09743634961727582102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6529647435872563341.post-58708817361619569402011-07-11T11:46:21.335-04:002011-07-11T11:46:21.335-04:00When a doctoral student I learned to play rugby. They were shocked that they had to make up a drill to teach us to dive over the touchline because we had been so ingrained in avoiding falling much less diving into the dirt.JoVEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16680602039278597976noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6529647435872563341.post-69438584815203511642011-07-10T15:29:46.824-04:002011-07-10T15:29:46.824-04:00Wow, I can't believe what that Dealine person ...Wow, I can't believe what that Dealine person said. I'm tempted to write her and explain why equality means equality in every arena, and how much comedy has reflected the double standard.

With you on the dirt. I used to catch bugs as a kid, and at least my former discipline allowed me to participate in a couple of archaeological digs.
